Why it matters
About 12,800 years ago, mid-thaw, the warming planet slammed back into the deep cold of the Ice Age — in places within a single human lifetime — and the great Ice-Age mammals vanished. A dark layer of soot and shattered rock lies across continents at exactly this moment. Twelve centuries later it ended just as abruptly: Greenland's ice records several degrees of warming inside a decade.
It is the closest thing in the whole geological record to a dated apocalypse — and it sits precisely where a lost chapter of the human story would have had to end. Old enough to erase a precursor; recent enough to be remembered, everywhere, as the Flood. That is why it is the spine of this whole expedition.

The event is not in doubt — it is one of the best-dated climate jolts we have. The cause is where it splits. Mainstream science explains the Younger Dryas by a surge of glacial meltwater (from Lake Agassiz and the collapsing ice sheets) that weakened the Atlantic's overturning circulation and chilled the Northern Hemisphere.
The rival Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis — a fragmenting comet or airburst (Firestone et al., 2007) — is a disputed minority view; many specialists consider it unsupported, even refuted. A "black mat" boundary layer carrying a platinum spike at some sites is real and genuinely strange, but does not require an impact to explain it.
We grade the event grounded and the comet contested — honestly. Graham Hancock leans on the impact to explain how an advanced culture could vanish; the freeze is rock-solid, the comet is not. What the catastrophe gives the lost-world case is means and motive — a planet-scale reset at exactly the right moment. It does not, by itself, prove anyone was there to be erased.
