The carved lid of Pakal's tomb at Palenque looks, to some eyes, like a man seated at the controls of a machine. It is the cleanest test on the whole map of seeing-what-we-want versus reading a culture on its own terms. The mainstream reading is well documented and frankly strong: every element is standard Maya cosmology — Pakal falling into the underworld along the world-tree, framed by sky-bands and the maize god. We grade the 'astronaut' interpretation as contested-to-speculative and do not endorse it. We include it precisely because honesty means showing the cases that probably have a mundane explanation, not only the flattering ones. If our lens can be fooled here, we want to know it.
